Never assume that this will not happen to you and reading this will make sure that you are prepared for a Plumbing emergency.

It's 10.00pm at night, kids are tucked in bed. Your favourite TV program is about to start and your wife gets up to put the kettle on. She screams. Water is flooding the kitchen. A pipe has burst under the kitchen sink and water is flowing fast and furiously towards the new lounge carpet.

Plumbing emergencies can happen anytime – day or night. The emergency can be from a burst water pipe, a sewer stoppage which causes your toilets to overflow or a tap that will not turn off.

Every homeowner should know that there is one important valve located in every home. The main water valve.

This is usually located on the boundary of your property by the water meter. Do yourself a favour and take a walk to find this. Show your wife and kids where to find it so that a small plumbing emergency doesn't escalate into an expensive cause of damage.

In the emergency above, this homeowner can get immediate relief when the main water shut off valve is closed. It will stop the flow of incoming water from the local Water District from going into your plumbing system and thus stopping the flow of water from the pipe. The next step would be to call your local local plumber to fix the leak.

In the past month we have had two blocked drains at home (Yes, it happens at a Plumbers home too). With 4 kids at home during school holidays, visitors, tons of rain and a property full of trees - it was bound to happen.

The first blockage was easy to fix with a quick jetblast, but it was also a warning that there were possible issues with the drain. After sending the camera down, we found that tree roots had made their way into the drain and a section of drain needed replacing.

Now, we have been super busy at WOODS Plumbing, so I put this little job on the backburner, waiting for a spare moment to get it done. That is when blockage No 2. happened (At 10.30pm). Needless to say, job got done in the morning.

The lesson here is that a reccuring drain blockages are a sure sign that there is something wrong with your drain system. Save yourself money in the long run and get the drain fixed. Often it is a simple case of locating the blockage, digging up that small section of pipe and replacing with new.

We offer a free drain camera service with every drain unblocking we do. It means that we can fix it the first time and you don't need to keep calling us back to unblock your drain. Plus we know how frustrating a blocked drain can be - so we offer a same day service for drain unblocking on the Sunshine Coast. Speak to a Plumber now
